What is a memo or destination tag in a crypto transfer?
A wallet address may not be the only receiving detail. Learn when a memo or destination tag is required and what to check before confirming your exchange.

Updated:
A receiving address identifies where a blockchain transfer goes, but some receiving services need an additional identifier to assign it to the right customer. Depending on the asset and receiving service, that identifier may be called a memo or destination tag.
Why a tag can matter
The XRP Ledger documentation explains that destination tags help an organization identify the intended recipient when it uses a shared address. A tag is additional routing information; it is not another wallet address.
Read the destination's instructions
Start from the deposit screen of the wallet or exchange that will receive your funds. Read the address, network and any memo or tag requirement together. Do not copy a tag from a previous deposit or another account. Do not assume every transfer of the same cryptocurrency has identical requirements.
Check the NefiSwap order
- Select the correct receiving asset and network.
- Copy the receiving address from the destination's current deposit instructions.
- If a memo or tag is required, enter its exact value in the corresponding field.
- Review the complete receiving details before you continue or confirm payment.
A blank optional field should remain blank when the destination does not require it. If the destination requires a value but the selected route does not provide a way to enter it, stop and ask NefiSwap Support before sending.
If a transfer is missing
Keep the order identifier and the public transaction hash. Contact the receiving service when a transfer reached its address but was not assigned to your account, and contact NefiSwap about the related order status. Whether the receiving service can resolve the problem depends on the actual transfer and its procedures. This guide does not promise recovery.
Support should never need your wallet's recovery phrase or private key. Share the order and transaction reference through the official support channel, and keep credentials out of screenshots or messages. For a broader walkthrough, see the Payeer-to-crypto guide.
Keep the destination's routing instructions together
When you open a deposit screen, treat the address, network and extra routing identifier as one set of instructions. Copying only the address can omit the information the service uses to assign funds to your account. Conversely, copying a tag without the matching address and chain is also incomplete. Read the label next to the field: a destination tag, a source tag and an order reference have different purposes and should not be substituted for each other.
The XRP Ledger documentation describes how destination tags supply information that a receiving organization's own systems use to credit customers. This explains a common distinction: the blockchain can record a transfer to a shared address while the business still needs the correct customer identifier. It does not mean every XRP destination or every NefiSwap route requires a tag. The receiving service's current instructions determine what you need for that particular deposit.
| Detail | Purpose | Source of the value |
|---|---|---|
| Address | Identifies the receiving blockchain account | Current destination deposit screen |
| Network | Identifies the chain on which to transfer | Destination instructions and selected order |
| Memo or destination tag | Additional routing information when required | Instructions for your destination account |
| NefiSwap order reference | Identifies the exchange support record | The created order |
| Transaction identifier | Identifies a blockchain transfer | Sending wallet or network explorer |
Start from the account that will receive the funds
Log in to the receiving service through its usual official entry point and open the relevant asset's deposit page. Select the network before copying details. A deposit page for a different asset or a different chain is not an interchangeable template. If the service provides account-specific instructions, use the instructions for your own account rather than values from a forum, article screenshot or another customer's deposit.
Read any minimum deposit, crediting rule or warning beside the address. These rules can matter even when you have the correct tag. A low amount may be unsuitable for the destination's crediting policy; a supported chain may temporarily be unavailable. If the destination displays a maintenance message, creating a fresh exchange quote does not override that maintenance.
Enter the additional value without modifying it
Copy the value into the corresponding memo or tag field. Preserve the content required by the receiving service and the format expected by the selected route. Do not append your name, order number or explanation to a field intended for a specific routing value. Do not use a convenient replacement such as zero when a required identifier is missing. A value that passes a form's basic validation is not automatically the value for your account.
Before continuing, compare the complete entry with the original deposit instructions. Check for accidentally pasted spaces or missing characters, and verify that a browser autofill feature did not insert information from another transfer. If the destination's identifier appears incompatible with the available field, stop and ask Support to clarify the route. It is better to resolve the mismatch before payment than to rely on manual recovery afterward.
Distinguish optional fields from missing requirements
If the destination explicitly does not require a memo or tag, leave an optional field blank rather than inventing a value. If the destination requires one and the order offers no matching field, do not interpret the missing field as permission to omit it. Confirm that you selected the correct asset and network first, then contact NefiSwap Support about the missing input.
A self-custody wallet and a custodial exchange can use different receiving arrangements for the same asset. One may identify your wallet by a unique address; another may use a shared address and a tag. Do not transfer a requirement from one service to another solely because both display the same ticker. Current destination instructions take precedence over your memory of an earlier deposit.
Know which side of the exchange you are checking
Your personal receiving details belong to the output side of an exchange. The funding instructions issued by NefiSwap belong to its input side. Both can contain an address and an additional identifier, but they describe different transfers. Do not copy the output tag into the payment you send to fund the order, or copy the order's funding tag into your own destination details.
A useful review is to read the flow aloud: I send this asset on this network to the order's funding instructions; the order sends that asset on that network to my destination instructions. Keep the two sets of values separate. Changing a receiving address after a payment has been sent may require a supported order action or assistance; a fresh browser tab does not change the funded order.
If the blockchain transfer succeeded but the balance is missing
Record the transaction identifier and inspect it on the correct chain's explorer. Verify the asset, receiving address, transaction result and any routing value recorded for the transfer. Compare those fields with the instructions you used. Then check the order's recorded status and the destination's deposit history. A successful blockchain transaction and a completed customer credit are related but distinct events.
Contact the party that controls the receiving address when the destination cannot assign a deposit. For an NefiSwap funding transfer, begin with NefiSwap Support and the order reference. For delivery to a third-party exchange, that exchange may need to review its account crediting. Provide a concise factual record rather than sending funds again. A support team may request evidence of the sending account; provide it only through the service's official channel.
Recovery can depend on the network, account policy and access to the receiving address. No public article can guarantee that a missing or incorrect tag will be repaired. Do not send recovery phrases, private keys or passwords to anyone who offers to retrieve the transfer. A transaction identifier is evidence about a transfer; it is not a credential that authorizes wallet access.
Common questions about memos and tags
Is a memo the same as an address?
No. It is additional information required by some receiving arrangements. Use the destination's labels to determine where each value goes.
Can I reuse a tag?
Use the current instructions for the intended account. Do not assume a tag from a previous deposit remains valid for a different destination, chain or order.
Does a required confirmation count fix a missing tag?
More confirmations do not add missing routing information. Confirmations concern the blockchain transaction; account attribution can require a separate review.
What should I retain?
Keep the order reference, intended asset and network, relevant public transaction identifier, and the receipt or destination instructions. Review the user manual before the next exchange, and use official Support for an unresolved mismatch.
